Contact lenses for beginners

By Anwar Optical, Karachi. Updated .

Contact lenses are thin lenses worn on the surface of the eye. They can correct your vision or change the colour of your eyes. This guide covers what a beginner should know before starting.

The two main purposes

  • Vision correction. Lenses with a power from your prescription. They need an eye test and a proper fitting.
  • Colour (cosmetic). Lenses that change how your eyes look. They may or may not have a power. We stock coloured lenses: see contact lenses and our price page.

Both types sit on your eye, so both need hygiene and a good fit. Even lenses with no power should be fitted properly.

Choose a shade

The colour looks different on every eye. A shade can look stronger on light eyes and subtler on dark eyes. Browse by colour: grey, brown and hazel, green and blue.

Replacement schedules

Lenses are made for a set wearing period, for example a single day or a month. Follow the schedule printed on your pack. Wearing lenses for longer than intended raises the risk of irritation and infection. Our lens replacement reminder helps you keep track.

Your first week

  • Start with a few hours a day, and follow the advice from your eye care professional or the pack.
  • Take the lenses out if your eyes feel dry, red or uncomfortable.
  • Keep your glasses with you, and read how to look after them.

Hygiene essentials

  1. Wash and dry your hands before you touch your lenses.
  2. Use fresh contact lens solution, never tap water or saliva.
  3. Replace your lens case regularly.
  4. Do not sleep in your lenses unless the pack and your eye care professional say they are made for it.
  5. Never share lenses.

Our guide to wearing and caring for coloured contact lenses covers the daily routine step by step.

Common mistakes

  • Wearing lenses for longer than the schedule allows.
  • Topping up old solution instead of using fresh solution.
  • Ignoring redness or pain. Take the lens out and see an eye doctor.
  • Applying make-up before putting lenses in.

Next steps

If you also need glasses, book an eye test and read how to read your prescription.
