How to find your frame size
Part of our guide: how to choose glasses frames. For children, see kids’ glasses: a guide for parents.
A frame that is the wrong size slides down, pinches, or leaves the lens off-centre. The size is printed on most frames, so you can read it in a minute. Our frame size checker compares two frames for you.
Step by step
- Look inside the arm. Most frames have three numbers printed on the inside of an arm, for example 52-18-145.
- Read the numbers. They are in millimetres: lens width (52), bridge width (18), and arm length (145).
- Measure the glasses you wear now. Use a ruler to check the lens width and the bridge. If they fit you well, look for a frame with similar numbers.
- Compare with the typical ranges below.
- Check the fit. The frame should sit on your nose without sliding, and the arms should rest behind your ears without squeezing.
Typical sizes
| Type | Lens width | Bridge | Arm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult | About 50 to 54 mm | 16 to 19 mm | 135 to 145 mm |
| Aviator sunglasses | About 55 to 60 mm | 14 to 17 mm | 135 to 145 mm |
| Kids | About 42 to 48 mm | 15 to 18 mm | 125 to 135 mm |
These are typical ranges, not exact rules. Many frames on our site show their printed size on the product page, and where a size is not printed the page says so.
Frame size and your PD
The centres of your lenses should sit in front of your pupils. If your frame is much wider than your face, your PD may not line up well. A frame that is too small can also cut the field of view. Ask us if you are unsure.
