How to choose glasses frames

By Anwar Optical, Karachi. Updated .

Choosing frames is easier when you decide a few things in order. You will wear them every day, so comfort and fit matter as much as looks. Here is a simple order to follow.

1. Start with fit, not style

A frame that does not fit will slide, pinch or leave your lens off-centre, however nice it looks. Check the three numbers inside the arm (lens width, bridge, arm length) and compare them with glasses you already wear comfortably. Our guide to finding your frame size shows how, and the frame size checker does the comparison for you.

2. Pick a shape for your face

A frame should balance your face. Angular frames soften a round face, and curved frames soften a strong jaw. Read which glasses suit your face shape, or take the Frame Face Match quiz. Then browse by shape: round, cat-eye, square and rectangle and half-rim.

3. Choose a material

Material Good for Keep in mind
Metal A light, thin look. Nose pads can be adjusted for a closer fit. Thin arms can bend, and a coating can wear at the nose pads over time.
Plastic (including sheet frames) Bold colours and thicker shapes. Thick frames can feel heavier, and the plastic can crack under pressure.
Transparent A soft look that blends with your skin tone. Scratches and marks show more easily.

4. Think about your lenses

5. Check the comfort

  • The bridge should rest on your nose without sliding or leaving deep marks.
  • The arms should sit behind your ears without squeezing your head.
  • The frame should not touch your cheeks when you smile.

6. Choose a colour you will keep wearing

Neutral colours such as black, brown, gold and silver go with most clothes. Bolder colours are fun on a second pair. If you are unsure, try the frame on at our counter in Shah Faisal Colony.
